If you are like most homeowners, you want your home to reflect beauty, comfort and value. But like most homeowners, you’re probably also on a budget when it comes to making home improvements. As much as you’d love to spend thousands on upgrades, you’re realistic and know that small, affordable home improvements can have an equally lasting effect as large, pricey ones.
One of the very best and most cost effective ways to add beauty and value to your home is through your trim work. Trim work is one of the more affordable home improvements, and it can have a dramatic effect on any room or nook.
Some of our favorite trim work ideas include:
• Dressing up your fireplace with custom trim. Even if your home isn’t custom, you can give it a custom feel by utilizing trim work.
• Using trim to create a certain feel, like a “country charm” or an “exotic oasis,” to give your home or even a particular room a distinctive personality.
• Using arched trim for a more formal or patrician type look. Arched trim work especially looks great in formal dining rooms, smoking rooms or studies.
• Softening the look of particular rooms, like master baths or sunrooms, so that elegance is tempered with a feeling of welcoming.
Trim work is also not a difficult or time consuming fix, either. So, if you hire a reputable trim work installer, you can see a transformation pretty quickly for just a small investment (as compared with other home improvements!).
Usually, your builder can recommend a trim work installer, or you can ask for references from friends, family and neighbors. It’s especially important to get the names and numbers of installers whose work you’ve seen and like (ex. If your friend has gorgeous trim around her fire place, ask her who she used for her trim work job).
As with any home improvement project, it’s also advisable that you start with a budget, say $500 or $1000 per room. If you know how much you can afford to spend, you’ll be much less likely to get in over your head. Remember, the more ornate, involved or large a trim work project, the higher the cost. Happy remodeling!
